Eight tips to get you started

1. Create a study plan

A well-structured study plan is essential for effective exam preparation. Start by organising your study materials, setting clear goals, and creating a realistic timetable. Break down the topics or subjects you need to cover and allocate specific time slots for each. Try to stick to your plan and adjust it as needed to stay on track but remember to add in some needed study breaks and fun time.

2. Understand the exam format

For some of you, this may be your first time sitting an exam so it’s important to familiarise yourself with the exam format and requirements. Review past papers, mark schemes, and examiner reports to get an idea of the types of questions, time limits, and marking criteria. This will help you tailor your study approach and practice accordingly.

3. Practise past papers

It sounds like a given but practice really does make perfect! Solve past papers under timed conditions to simulate the exam environment. This will help you understand the exam structure, improve your time management skills, and identify any areas that need further review. Review your answers and identify your strengths and your weaknesses and build from there. The more you practise the easier it will be on the day!

4. Adopt effective study techniques

Experiment with different study techniques to find what works best for you. Some effective techniques include active reading, summarising notes, creating flashcards, teaching the material to someone else, and practising past papers. Experiment with different methods to find what helps you retain information most effectively.

5. Seek help if needed

Don't be afraid to seek assistance if you're struggling with a particular topic or subject. Talk to your teachers, classmates, or tutor for clarification. There are also online resources, tutorials, and study guides available to support your learning.

6. Take care of yourself

Taking care of your physical and mental well-being is crucial during exam preparation. Get enough sleep, try to eat healthily, and exercise regularly to keep your mind and body in optimal condition. Manage stress by taking breaks, practising relaxation techniques, and staying positive.

7. Stay organised

Keep your study materials, notes, and revision resources organised. Use colour-coded folders, labels, or digital tools to keep track of your study materials and notes. Being organised will help you access information quickly and stay focused during your revision.

8. Stay motivated

Set short-term and long-term goals, reward yourself for achieving milestones, and visualise your success. Surround yourself with positive influences and stay focused on your progress rather than comparing yourself to others.
