What subject is right for me?

When considering university, it’s important to think about what subject you want to study and why. Here are some things to think about to help choose the right subject for you:

  1. Enjoyment - think about what you enjoy day-to-day and contemplate whether this could be part of your future job.

  2. Research - exploring different job websites or career options is a great place to start your academic journey and discover what you want to do.

  3. Aspirations - think about your career goals and learn about the different qualifications you need as part of the role specification.

  4. Availability - search for courses by subject and learn more about what’s involved in the course and what subjects are available before making your decision.

If you are looking to study abroad and need a visa to study in the UK, you will need to check if you need a visa and determine if you are eligible to work on UKCISA’s ‘Can you work?’ website.

Home or away: deciding where to study

Some students have  their heart set on one  dream university, while others want to have the option to choose the course and university that suits them best. Either way, it’s fundamental to do your research to ensure you make the right choice.

Discover our top tips to help you help pick where to study:

  1. Check university entry requirements - different universities and courses will have specific entry requirements that you need to meet to receive unconditional or conditional admission offers.

  2. Check the application deadline - make sure that you do your homework and know the deadline associated with your chosen course and universities.

  3. Attend an open day or if you can’t visit this in person, attend a virtual one. This will provide you with the opportunity to meet fellow students, lecturers and explore the university to give you a better idea if you picture yourself going there.
