Academic Online Courses
How does the course work?
After you have signed up for the course, you will be asked to complete an assessment form which will give the tutor some background information you and your interest in the subject.
This will help us to make sure that you get the most you can from your course. You will have two topics in your first week, and two in your second.
You will build up your subject knowledge and skills by completing between 5-8 activities per topic.
Each week you will attend one tutor-led webinar with the rest of your class. This is your opportunity to explore the week's topics in more detail through discussion and debate with your classmates.
Each week you will have one tutorial with 1 or 2 other students, which is your opportunity to discuss your submitted work in a small group setting, with your tutor. Tutorials will never have more than 3 students in the session.
How long are the teaching sessions?
You will have 4 live teaching sessions, totalling 4 hours. In each week you will have 1 x 1 hour webinar and 1 x 1 hour tutorial.
When not in live teaching sessions you will have activities to work on at your own pace. Each topic will have around 4 hours of activity work.
Each piece of submitted work (two each week) should take about an hour each.
You will receive your timetable approximately 7 days before the course begins.
This is a total of 24 hours of work per course, including 4 hours of live teaching.
You will also receive 4 hours of live teaching support from a Teaching Assistant.
What teaching support is there?
We provide you with access to a Teaching Assistant who you will be able to have live webinar time with, 3 times per week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday). Each session is 30 minutes long. In these sessions you and your fellow students can ask questions, check progress, and clear up any queries or problems.
Will I get one-to-one time with my tutor?
No, you won’t have one to one time with your tutor, but you will have two small group tutorials, both lasting 60 minutes each, with you and one or two other students. We follow the Oxbridge methodology which advocates small group teaching.
How can I access the Melio Learning Platform?
Please ensure you are using a desktop or laptop computer. Please do not use a tablet as you won’t be able to access the learning materials.
Before your course begins you will be given a password to use to log in to our learning platform with your email address, along with a link to the learning platform.

Webinars and Tutorials for Academic Online Courses
What's the difference between a webinar and a tutorial?
Our webinars are led by the tutor and involve the whole class group. You will discuss and debate the subject, and the topics you are studying in that week.
Our tutorials follow the same principles as those central to traditional Oxford and Cambridge University tutorial teaching methodologies. You will share your tutorial sessions with 1 or 2 other students, and you will discuss your submitted work with your tutor and receive their feedback.
What is the best place to be when I'm joining a webinar or tutorial?
In order to receive the full impact of the webinar and tutorial, please log-in in an area where you can listen, think and discuss without disturbing others and where you can focus to participate accordingly. Webinars and tutorials are essential parts of the course through which you talk directly to your tutor and other students. Please make sure you are in an environment where you can participate fully. You may wish to use headphones and a microphone in order to hear your fellow students and talk to them.
How will I benefit from tutorials?
There are many benefits to tutorial teaching in small groups; it is personalised, it is in depth, and it is a safe space to explore your ideas.
The teaching is all about you and your learning. Your questions never get missed and can be answered by your expert tutor in as much detail as you want. The teaching can be pitched and adjusted precisely to your level, so you’ll never get left behind and you’ll never get bored.
There is nothing better than tutorial-style teaching for getting deep into your chosen subject. You have the time and attention to delve into all the most interesting details and every aspect of the most important ideas in a way that would be impossible in typical school or university teaching.
One of the most important features of tutorials is that it is a safe space - there are no stupid questions and no wrong answers. Your tutor will encourage you to think for yourself and explore your own original ideas. The tutorials are a golden opportunity for you to hone your ideas through the tutor’s close attention, in-depth feedback and analysis, and their constructive guidance.
We want you to learn from the best, and become the best, and be inspired by the tutors and meet your future academic potential.
What should I do if I am late, sick, or can’t make my session?
If your session will be disrupted, then please email info@melioeducation.com and we can pass this information to your tutor. If you can’t make your session, then tell us and we will contact you to try and make an alternative arrangement.
Will the webinars be recorded, and can I record my webinar?
For moderation purposes your webinars and tutorials will be recorded in order to provide an online duty of care to our students and tutors. These recordings will be stored securely and accessed only by the team member in charge of moderation.
A version of the recording featuring only the tutor's video feed (but audio from all students) may be shared with students who have missed the class or may be used for marketing purposes. Students will not be identifiable in these recordings.
You do not have permission to record tutorials or webinars. If you need access to recordings of tutorials or webinars please email admin@melioeducation.com
Can I invite other people to join the webinar or tutorial?
If you want to bring your friends please do get them to enrol too, and we can allocate them a place on the course or program. Everyone is welcome within the limits of the course capacity.
However if your friends are not enrolled on the course please do not ask them to attend your webinar or your tutorial or be with you when you join it. This would be a breach of your Terms and Conditions, and you could be asked to leave the course. The content of the webinars and tutorials is tailored to the students attending based on the work completed up until that point and there would be no value in anyone external joining these sessions. For online safeguarding purposes we only have the named tutor and students participate in the live sessions.
As a parent can I listen in on my child's learning sessions?
Only the tutor and the named students can participate in the live sessions. We understand that parents / guardians may want to listen to sessions their children are involved in, so we ask that students notify the tutor of this, and that parents / guardians do not appear on screen or make any interruptions to the session. Please bear in mind that the live sessions include other students, whose privacy is also to be respected. This is to protect all the individuals who are taking part in the course or program.
1:1 Tutorials
How can I access my 1:1 tutorials?
In advance of the start of your tutorials, we will provide you with a link to your 'tutorial room'. This will either be on Zoom or Vectera depending on your needs and location.
Do I need a computer?
We recommend that for the best learning experience, you access your tutorial room from a laptop or PC, not from a phone or tablet.
What are the technical requirements for a 1:1 tutorial?
For your 1:1 tutorial you will need a reliable internet connection, headphones with a microphone and an environment where you can participate fully. We strongly recommend a device with a camera so that your tutor can see you, which will help with the quality of the session.
If your internet connection is not good or you are worried about it, you could run an internet speed test in advance. For a good tutorial with camera and microphone you would need at least 2Mbps download speed, 2Mbps upload speed and a max ping of 25 (ping = delay). For example, if you have a connection of 100Mbps download and 1Mbps upload, there's a chance you'll notice small interruptions in the connection.
Our tutorial rooms work on most browsers but we recommend Google Chrome for the best tutorial experience.
What if I miss a session or need to rearrange?
Once you have booked your course, we will plan your tutorial sessions with you. You will be asked for your time zone and preferred time of day for your tutorial sessions, which will be scheduled according to your tutor and your availability. After this point, any re-arrangement of the scheduled slots will be subject to an administrative fee of £50. Rescheduling of tutorials must be done at least 24 hours in advance, otherwise you may forfeit that session.
We can only reschedule the series of tutorials three times and add a maximum of two weeks to the duration before terminating the package.
We will always schedule one spare slot to allow sessions to be slipped in the event that one is missed through sickness. There is no extra charge if we need to use this pre-arranged slot.
What is the best place to be when joining a tutorial?
In order to receive the full impact of you tutorial, please join the tutorial room in an area where you can listen, think and discuss without disturbing others and where you can focus to participate accordingly. You may wish to use headphones and a microphone in order to hear your tutor well, and speak to them. You may also wish to have a desk to write at, and some paper and a pen to hand.

As a parent can I listen in on my child's 1:1 tutorial?
We are happy for parents to listen if they wish. However, they must make the tutor aware at the beginning of the tutorial that they are doing so, and not interrupt the session which is part of a carefully crafted curriculum, based around the chosen topics and the student's interests and abilities.
We can arrange a mid-package parent/tutor session to discuss progress - please contact the our team for more detail (there will be an additional cost). We monitor online activity and record tutorials for moderation purposes.
